Nikah / Marriage Procedure

Assalamu Alaikum. Thank you for choosing the Muslim Association of New Brunswick (MANB) to conduct your Nikah. Below is a clear outline of the Islamic and legal requirements, the steps involved, and the documents needed to complete the marriage process.

📜 Prophet ﷺ said:

إِذَا تَزَوَّجَ الْعَبْدُ فَقَدِ اسْتَكْمَلَ نِصْفَ الدِّينِ

“When a man marries he has fulfilled half of the religion.”

📘 Eligibility Requirements

To have your marriage officiated at MANB, the following conditions must be met:

  • 📄 The Nikah performed at MANB must include both the Islamic and legal marriage.
  • 🪪 A valid Marriage License from Service New Brunswick is required.
  • 👤 The bride and groom must be of legal age.
  • 🖊️ All marriages officiated at MANB must also be registered with Service New Brunswick.

🧭 Step-by-Step Process

📝 1. Preliminary Information (Form 1)

Contact MANB at info@manb.ca or 506‑633‑1675 to begin the process. After speaking with the Imam, both the bride and groom must submit their own Preliminary Information Form.

📨 2. Nikah Service Request (Form 2)

Once Form 1 is reviewed and approved, you will be asked to submit Form 2. Only one submission is required for both bride and groom.

🕌 3. Islamic Requirements

The Nikah contract requires:

  • 🤝 Offer and acceptance (Ijab & Qabool) freely and willingly
  • 💍 Mahr (dowry) from groom to bride
  • 👨‍👧 Wali (guardian) of the bride, if available
  • 👥 Two Muslim male witnesses (Wali does not count as a witness)

Witness names must be submitted in Form 2 and witnesses must be physically present on the day of Nikah.

🗣️ 4. Premarital Counseling

The Imam may schedule a premarital counseling session. Once all documents are complete, you will receive your Nikah date and instructions to obtain your Marriage License.

📜 5. Legal Requirements

A Marriage License must be obtained from Service New Brunswick. The original license and return envelope must be given to the Imam on the day of Nikah.

📂 6. Required Submissions Before the Ceremony

  • Form 1 — submitted separately by groom and bride
  • Form 2 — submitted once by the applicant

📅 7. What to Bring on the Day of Nikah

  • Marriage License and return envelope
  • Two Muslim male witnesses

📄 8. Documents You Will Receive

  • Islamic Marriage Certificate (Nikah/Aqd Zawaj)
  • Legal Marriage Certificate

Nikah Service Fee: $250

Payment can be made online with debit/credit card or by cash.
